Visitors to Fort Fisher Air Force Recreation Area were treated to a free blues concert June 15.

As part of Fort Fisher's free summer concert series, Valentino and the Piedmont Sheiks performed as the sun set over the Cape Fear River. Seated on folding chairs and beach towels, spectators spread out on the grass lawn in front of the bandstand while the
bluesy band from Raleigh entertained the crowd. Vendors sold hot dogs, hamburgers, funnel cakes and drinks.

Some visitors listened to the band from the nearby pier, casting fishing lines into the river while others fed the seagulls that hovered above looking for handouts.

Free concerts are also scheduled for July 20 and August 17, but visitors can find entertainment at Fort Fisher all throughout the summer.

Nestled between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, Fort Fisher has many recreation opportunities offered at prices that are favorable to military members, family members and retirees.

Classes are offered in surf fishing, crabbing and kayaking. Other programs include hermit crab racing, pirate treasure hunting and a public campfire complete with a storyteller and marshmallows.

The recreation area is located near the original Fort Fisher, which was used primarily by Confederate soldiers to protect supplies that were shipped up the Cape Fear River during the Civil War.

Camping facilities, cottages and traditional lodging are all offered at the recreation area as well as a full list of outdoor recreation rental equipment.
