Christopher Mohr, 77th Air Refueling Squadron operations officer, and his wife Bethany, were recognized by Downtown Goldsboro Development Corporation as Indicator of the Year at the DGDC Annual Dinner and Awards, Sept. 23, 2016, for their ongoing work through their company, Blue Yonder Properties, in Downtown Goldsboro, North Carolina. The award recognizes the indication of job and economic growth in the downtown area. Blue Yonder Properties specializes in the development and renovation of buildings within the historic section of Downtown Goldsboro.

More than 250 members of the 4th Fighter Wing commemorated the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Britain Sept. 23, 2016, which celebrates the victory over the German Luftwaffe during World War II. The evening began with a formal event with speeches from Dr. Roy Heidicker, 4th FW historian, and guest speaker, retired Lt. Col. Charles Konsler, a WWII veteran and pilot of the 335th Fighter Squadron. The informal part of the night ended with the burning of seven donated pianos. Each piano was decorated by some of the squadrons at Seymour Johnson AFB and judged by Col. Christopher Sage, 4th FW commander, and Flt. Lt. Douglas McKay, Royal Air Force exchange officer and pilot assigned to the 336th Fighter Squadron.

The 4th Civil Engineer Squadron hosted a joint-service explosive ordnance disposal exercise Sept. 13 - 15, 2016, on the EOD range at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. EOD Airmen assigned to the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron organized the three-day exercise to familiarize EOD technicians of the munitions involved with the F-15E Strike Eagle. To maximize the effectiveness of the exercise, the organizers invited their counterparts at both Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, to participate.

Members of Team Seymour observed the Prisoners of War/Missing in Action Remembrance Week, Sept. 12-15, at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. POW/MIA Remembrance Week pays respect to service members who were held captive or did not return home during past and present wars. More than 50 Airmen kicked off the week with a 5K run that began in front of the 4th Fighter Wing headquarters building. Additionally, 120-miles were logged during a 24-hour run to keep the POW/MIA flag moving for an entire day, and concluded with a ceremony featuring guest speaker, retired Sgt. 1st Class Gaspar Gonzalez, a former Korean War POW and U.S. Army Green Beret.

Members of Team Seymour held a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, Sept. 11, 2016, at the main fire station at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, to mark the 15-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks in 2001. More than 150 members of the base attended this year’s event, which featured a slideshow of imagery showing the towers and first responders during the attack and in the rubble, which had audience members holding back tears. A 21-gun salute, a bell-ringing ceremony by Sean Quinby, 4th Civil Engineer Squadron fire chief, and special narrations regarding different events of 9/11.

Suicide Prevention Airmen lend a helping hand
The issue of depression and suicide has been a hot topic that has directly affected military families for many years. According to a recent Veterans Affairs study, 20 military veterans commit suicide every day. This alarming, and in most cases preventable, epidemic is at the forefront of the military’s initiative to provide resources to take care of our nation’s service members and their families. The feelings of hopelessness or isolation can be very overwhelming and can happen to anyone for any number of reasons. The Air Force is educating members of the military to look out for their fellow wingmen and identify those who are struggling from depression or suicidal thoughts.
