Airmen of the 4th Fighter Wing and tenant units learn about a new way to work on their abdominal core at the base fitness center here, April 19.

A total of 20 physical training leaders went through an eight-hour Total Body Resistance Exercise and Suspension Training course.

TRX suspension training was founded by Randy Hetrick, a former Navy SEAL, as a way for him and his teammates to work out in non-traditional locations with little to no equipment during deployments. This innovative exercise training took off after Hetrick left the military.

"This course is designed to learn all about suspension training and help develop the skills necessary to execute TRX exercises properly," said Susane Pata, TRX senior instructor.

Pata traveled from from North Brunswick, N.J. to provide this training.

"I have taught this course at other military installations for not only the Air Force but the Army and Navy too," said Pata. "This type of training benefits military members because it is dedicated towards them for durability and operational readiness."

The TRX is a piece of equipment that consists of two nylon straps, handles and foot cradles. It can be suspended from any sturdy beam to include doors, trees, and light poles. The straps can support up to 350lbs and weighs less than 2lbs.

"I see the TRX system helping our Airmen strengthen their cores," said United States Air Force Master Sgt. Nathan Rubin, 4th Force Support Squadron fitness center director from Cleveland. "We see a lot of weak cores on a daily basis during PT testing. TRX is a total body workout system that incorporates the core into the majority of the exercises."

This type of training not only contributes to core stability but it improves strength, balance and flexibility.

"I feel like this program will benefit me and my co-workers because it can be adjusted to any fitness level," said United States Air Force reservist TSgt Jennifer Gutierrez, 567th Red Horse Squadron training manager from Fayetteville, N.C. "I will definitely pass this information about this course to others, especially those looking for a new challenging workout."

The fitness center staff will be providing classes in the future which will be open to all active duty, Department of Defense and civilian personnel.
