Local military history buffs gathered at the Wayne County Public Library for the inaugural meeting of the North Carolina Military History Round Table Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.

The purpose of the round table is to discuss the many aspects of military history. Any period of military history is a potential topic of discussion, including the ancient Greeks, the Romans, Napoleon, the Civil War, the World Wars and modern conflict.

The round table's founding president, Dr. Roy Heidicker, 4th Fighter Wing historian, gave the opening lecture titled, "The Lure of Military History: Alcibiades, Agincourt and Antietam."

The round table was formed with the intent of bringing people throughout the community together who have an interest in military history. Whether they are an experienced history professor or a high school student who found something they truly enjoy learning, the discussions are open to all.

About 30 people attended the first meeting, including professors, retirees, members of the 4th Fighter Wing, and other history buffs. The round table meets the third Tuesday of every month. The next meeting will be held at Wayne Community College on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Wayne Learning Center Building, seminar room number 131.

The guest speaker will be 4th Fighter Wing vice commander Col. Daniel DeBree, who will discuss the Falklands air war. All interested people are cordially invited to attend. The round table Web site can be accessed at www.ncmhrt.org, but it is still under construction.
