Don’t settle for a boring 2011 summer Published May 12, 2011 By Senior Airman Marissa Tucker 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- As the summer months approach, many Airmen and families begin to plan trips to destinations all over the United States and other countries as well. At Seymour Johnson, one does not have to travel too far for a good time. Centrally located about an hour and a half away from the Atlantic Coast, naturally, beaches are not few and far between and are usually the go-to places for weekend getaways. Although North Carolina has some of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast, there are many more destinations for those looking to mix up their summer fun. The Biltmore Estate Known as America's largest home, the Biltmore is an ideal location for those who enjoy architecture, interior design and have a thirst for American history. The home was built for George Washington Vanderbilt with the intention on being completely self sustaining. Guided and audio tours are available for the 250-room mansion and guests can enjoy a tour of the extensive winery, get guided horseback trail rides or shop in the Antler Hill Village. Appalachian Mountain Institute Ever wanted to try rock climbing, but did not know where to begin? From beginners to experts, the Appalachian Mountain Institute is a resource for anyone looking to learn or enhance their rock climbing skills. The courses are all hands on from day one and are taught by skilled and experienced instructors who are certified by the American Mountain Guides Association. All equipment is included in the cost, and, for the more adventurous types, they also offer ice climbing. The institute is located in Pisgah Forest, N.C. North Carolina Zoo Spanning more than 2,000 acres, the North Carolina Zoo located in Asheboro is now known as the nation's largest zoo. With more than 1,100 animals and 40,000 plants, the zoo can turn into a two day trip. They welcome military members and groups at a discount. NASCAR Hall of Fame For those who admire people with a need for speed, the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte is a must see. With more than 50 interactive exhibits and 40,000 square feet of displays, the hall of fame can be enjoyable for anyone. The facility will celebrate their one year anniversary this spring with several events open to the public. International Civil Rights Museum The International Civil Rights Center & Museum in Greensboro spans two floors and covers 30,000 square feet. It includes 17 exhibits arranged to guide visitors on a journey through the challenges African Americans faced in the struggle for equal rights. South Park Mall For those who can shop until they drop, the South Park Mall is the place to be. With more than 1.8 million square feet of stores and restaurants, it is retail paradise. It is the largest mall in North Carolina and located in Charlotte. Carrowinds Carowinds is one of the southeast's largest amusement parks and is a popular attraction for those young and young at heart. It includes a 12-acre area full of rides and games tailored to smaller children and for the older kids, they recently added the "Intimidator" which has an initial drop of 211 feet. The entire park has a "Wild West" theme and has live shows and events all season long. Though these are only a few destinations, there are many more throughout the state to suit various interests that are only a short (or long) drive away.
