Save a buck, apply for a scholarship, grant Published Jan. 5, 2011 By Tech. Sgt. Tammie Moore 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- In a perfect world having enough money would never be an issue, but in reality a lack of cash can severely limit a person's aspirations to earn a higher education. To help alleviate this burden, the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is hosting a college scholarship information night from 6-7 p.m. Jan. 18 at Heritage Hall. Attendees will learn about opportunities to save money on college tuition through the Post 9-11 GI Bill, Military Spouses Career Advancement program, Air Force Aid Society Grants, Air Force Association Scholarships, Air Force Club Member Scholarships, Spouse Club Scholarships and more. In addition, dependants have an opportunity to earn cash for college by applying for a Defense Commissary Agency scholarship. The DeCA is currently accepting applications for their 2011 Scholarships for Military Children Program. Each commissary that receives qualified applications will award at least one $1,500 scholarship. The scholarship is open to dependent, unmarried children of active duty personnel, Reserve, Guard and retired military members, survivors of service members who died while on active duty, or survivors of individuals who died while receiving retired pay from the military. The child must be younger than age 21 or age 23 if enrolled as a full-time student at a college or university. The applicant must be planning to attend or already attending an accredited college or university full time in the fall of 2011 or enrolled in a program of studies designed to transfer directly into a four-year program. Applicants must write an essay on the theme, "Our Nation has a goal of improving health and wellness. What are your ideas, and more importantly, how do you propose to put these ideas into action in your local community?" Applicants should turn their paperwork into their commissary by close of business Feb. 22, 2011.
