Open water SCUBA certification classes are available July 23 to 29 at the Berkeley Pool for the first five days and in Lillington, N.C., for the final two.

The cost of the course is $249 and is open to all military and Department of Defense personnel.

According to class instructors, anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn an open water diver certification. Throughout the course, participants learn fundamentals of scuba diving, including dive equipment and techniques. They earn their certification by completing five pool dives and knowledge development sessions and by making four open water dives.

Certified instructors based out of Fayetteville, N.C., will teach the 7-day course, said Jessica Epps, 4th Services Squadron.

A maximum of 12 people will be allowed to take the course. As of July 11, there were only five open slots available.

Those wishing to participate must sign up at Outdoor Recreation by July 12, Mrs. Epps said.
