10/5/2011 - SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Many Airmen know what it is like to not be able to afford an item they need. Whether it is furniture or a military uniform, many look for something within their price range.

Well what if Airmen could get the item they need for free? At the Airman's Attic, they can find a wide variety of items such as furniture, televisions or tables, to an Airman Battle Uniform blouse or a blues service dress coat. Furniture and items on the waiting list (microwaves, TVs, beds, couches, etc.) are available only to E-4 and below, but regular shopping is open to ranks E-6 and below. However, about twice a year the Airman's Attic opens its doors to all ranks.

"Everything [here] is free," said Sara McIntire, who volunteers regularly at the Airman's Attic.

Everything is free because all the items are donated, either by Airmen and civilians dropping-off items during business hours or by the collection bins behind the building.

The Airman's Attic is a non-profit organization, run by volunteers who enjoy helping Airmen on base. The people that run the Airman's Attic are inviting anyone on-base or civilians that have the ability to get on base to come and volunteer. With the large amount of donations that come in weekly, the attic needs as much help as they can get.

"We are always in need of volunteers, there is always something to do around here," said Emily Haffner, the Airman's Attic coordinator. "It doesn't have to be a military person it can be a dependent, groups on base or even a squadron."

The shop is open to Airmen Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m. to noon, and Thursdays, 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteer hours are typically Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers not only help sort and organize the donated items, but also get a firsthand look of what great or sometimes even crazy things people donate like musical sweaters and old costumes. They also get to meet others on-base that they can share a few laughs and words of wisdom with.

For information regarding volunteering at the Airman's Attic, call 919-722-7181.
