The 4th Fighter Wing conducted an active shooter exercise here Feb. 4, to test the base's response procedures to a crisis situation on base.

An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined or populated area.

During the training exercise, 4th Security Forces Squadron Airmen responded to a threat where an armed individual had opened fire at the fitness center.

After neutralizing the threat, first responders immediately performed self aid buddy care on the victims. Shortly thereafter, base fire emergency services and medical personnel arrived on scene to care for the victims.

"An active shooter exercise such as the one conducted today are vital to keeping the Seymour Johnson community safe," said Maj. Troy Jones, 4th SFS commander. "They allow first responders and base populace an opportunity to train in a controlled environment in the event a real world incident should occur."
