Traveling is an important part of the holiday season, however, many basic safety principles are often ignored as people hurry to meet family and friends to celebrate this special time.

The Travel Risk Planning System, an online, automated risk-assessment tool, seeks to aid Airmen in recognizing and avoiding road hazards to include fatigue, long distance driving, seatbelt usage and weather conditions.

There were recently several TRiPS upgrades and Airmen will now see a more user-friendly program with enhancements that consist of common access card-enabled admittance.

The tool also engages leaders in Airmen's travel plans by opening a productive dialogue to discuss an individual's potential risks, which allows someone to always know your plans. Leadership will know when to expect your arrival and ensure you know who to call for help in case of an emergency.

Trip preparation is not only about the risk management, but also ensures your car is prepared.

Before leaving, consider the following:

· Ensure brakes, tires, battery, lights and all systems are working properly

· Guarantee all fluid reserves are filled and door locks lubricated

· Clear the snow and ice from your vehicle's roof, hood, and trunk, especially from the windows, mirrors and lights

· Always wear your seat belt

· Leave a few minutes early

· Begin driving slowly in the lowest gear recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer

· Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shaded areas and bridges

· Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles

· Treat a snowplow or spreader as you would emergency response vehicles and do not pass unless absolutely necessary

· Keep an emergency winter-driving kit in your car

The goal is for families to have a wonderful holiday season and return to work safe and sound.
