Run for a cause Published Sept. 25, 2012 By Tech. Sgt. Tammie Moore 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- The 4th Annual Wife Appreciation Run Against Domestic Violence to benefit Wayne Uplift Resource Association, a local domestic violence shelter, takes place Sept. 29 at Stoney Creek Park located on Ash St. in Goldsboro. In the past this event has attracted novice runners, experienced runners and even men running in high-heels to show their commitment to ending domestic violence and spousal abuse. The 4th Fighter Wing Family Advocacy Office is co-hosting the annual WAR with several off-base agencies from Goldsboro and Wayne County. The event features a 5k run and a 1 mile walk with event registration open from 7:30-8:15 a.m. and the run beginning at 8:30 a.m. Jerome Ellis the Family Advocacy outreach director encourages everyone to participate in this event. "You will be standing with people who are committed to ending spousal abuse and your participation will help to raise awareness of one of the most horrific crimes within our community," he said. "We run to send out our message, we must all work together to take a stand against domestic violence." Advance event registration cost $20 to run and $15 to walk. Registration the day of the event is $5 more. Each participant will receive a WAR T-Shirt. "All proceeds to benefit Wayne Uplift Resource Association," Mr. Ellis said. "Donations are also welcome, even if you are unable to participate in the event." According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, domestic abuse is the single largest cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the U.S.; more than muggings, car accidents and rapes combined. Wayne Uplift offers a variety of services to promote safe families and prevent sexual violence, said Linda Holden-Cox, Wayne Uplift Resource Association executive director. There is a hotline, support and empowerment classes, a shelter and more. The best way for someone to reach out for support is to call 919-736-1313. Someone will answer anytime day or night. For more information about the WAR, call Mr. Ellis as 919-722-1878. To register in advance visit, Adam's Auto Wash at 334 N. Spence Ave. or Curtis Media at 2581 US Highway 70 West both in Goldsboro.
