B&GC honors volunteers Published July 23, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Aubrey Robinson 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs GOLDSBORO, N.C. -- U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 4th Fighter Wing attended a volunteer appreciation luncheon hosted by the Boys & Girls Club here, July 12. Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Airmen volunteered approximately 400-hours mentoring and improving the B&GC facility since April. "Being appreciated for what we do is great," said Staff Sgt. James Ward, 4th Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen dorm leader and Group 5/6 vice president. "It's fantastic that we can help and this will encourage volunteers to keep coming out." The Airmen and children participated in several games including volleyball, baseball and tug-of-war throughout the event. Children of all ages said the luncheon was a great way to honor the Airmen for their positive mentorship. Sometimes the children's home lives break them down, said Marvin Ford, unit director at the B&GC. He believes the Airmen's presence and productivity show the children a different and more positive lifestyle. "It's important for Airmen to give back because we all came from the community," Ward said. "Who knows how many future Airmen are (at the club) right now and Group 5/6's goal is to help out the Airman tier. We figure, 'why not expand that to the tier before them; before they become Airmen?'" Approximately 80 Airmen from base currently volunteer at the club, not only mentoring children but also improving the facility. They recently refurbished pool tables and plan to fix the library's bookcases and skylights in order to prevent water from leaking when it rains. The volunteers believe that the potential to change children's lives is in their hands and although their impact may not be seen for years, they plan to continue to positively contribute to children's lives.
