Motorcycle safety courses will no longer be available on base due to manning shortages. Instead new riders must attend the Basic Rider course at a community college beginning June 1.

Active duty, guard, and reserve military members, and Department of Defense civilians, are required to attend a BRC prior to riding on Seymour Johnson. The course teaches riders the basic skills needed to safely operate a motorcycle in traffic.

New procedures require military members and Department of Defense civilians assigned to the 4th Fighter Wing to notify their unit motorcycle safety representative that they are interested in taking the course. Interested personnel must visit Lenoir or Johnston Community College websites to sign-up, pay using personal funds and attend the course as if it were a military appointment.

Reimbursement of the BRC, up to $125, will be available to required class participants who provide the original and a copy of their receipt, Motorcycle Safety Foundation card and standard form 1034. Riders can expect payment in 30 days. Those who attended a BRC prior to the start date may not apply for reimbursement.

"The class may not be reimbursed if missed due to personal reasons or failure," said James McNeil, 4th FW safety office safety specialist. "If someone misses the class because of military obligation they may be reimbursed with the support of a signed memorandum from their unit commander."

For more information about the new procedures contact your unit motorcycle representative and for sign-up information visit www.lenoircc.edu or www.johnstoncc.edu.
