The 4th Security Forces Squadron conducted a ruck march in honor of National Police Week here, May 14, 2012.

Police Week is a nationwide event that honors police officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designatingMay 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week surrounding that date falls is recognized as Police Week.

"We have some incredible stories of heroism just within our own unit," said Master Sgt. Kurt Black, 4th Security Forces Squadron logistics and readiness superintendent. "Coming together and paying our due respect to the fallen and also to celebrate our profession and accomplishments are what these events are all about."

The Airmen marched in teams of two approximately 6.2 miles along trails throughout the base competing for the best completion time. The best time recorded was 1 hour and 26 minutes.

"It was an honor to be out here supporting this event," said Airman Joseph Lynch, 4th Security Forces Squadron patrolman. "It was a great workout!"

Police week will consist of multiple events designed to raise awareness of the responsibilities that come with wearing the badge. The remaining events are a shoot-out competition and an informative display of weapons, gear and vehicles.
