Airmen from the 4th Security Forces Squadron joined local law enforcement agencies in a memorial ceremony at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, N.C., May 9, to kick-off police week.

In 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The week the day falls within is recognized as Police Week, a nationwide event that honors all police officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.

"Police Week is about remembering the fallen officers of the past and also paying homage to those currently serving," said Tech. Sgt. Elmer Smith, 4th SFS NCO in charge of mobility. "It is very important for everyone to understand that police officers take a giant risk everyday they step out to do their jobs."

This week consists of multiple events to raise awareness of the responsibilities that come with wearing the badge. The events include a 5.6 mile ruck march, a shoot-out competition and informative display of weapons, gear and vehicles. The week will wrap-up with a small burger burn for all the participants.

"I feel that it is a great opportunity to attend these types of community events," Smith said. "It builds camaraderie among us as well as the local agencies and stands to prove to other police officers that if something were to happen, we are a family and will be there to support each other."

Police Week also gives the 4th SFS defenders time to reflect on their accomplishments and reminds them of the importance of what they do every day.

"Allowing unit personnel to partake in these events gives everyone a breather from day-to-day operations and allows them to kick back and have a little fun," said Master Sgt. Kurt Black, 4th Security Forces Squadron logistics and readiness superintendent. "This is a time to reflect on all U.S. Air Force security forces members who have given their ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, whether that be in garrison or in a deployed theater."
