SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- The following is a list of events taking place across the wing and in the local community:
- The Arts Council of Wayne County is hosting First Friday, which gives individuals an chance to meet with local artists and check out their displays May 4 from 5-8 p.m. This free event takes place at the Arts Council building located at 102 N. John St. in Goldsboro.
- A pre-Memorial Day celebration will take place May 4 at Herman Park Center in Goldsboro. There will be a free lunch for active duty personnel on Seymour Johnson Air Force base from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to recognize their contributions to freedom.
- Lakefest, a live music festival, takes place May 6 starting at 1 p.m. at the Durham Lake Recreational Park located at 1451 Durham Lake Rd. in Dudley. The all ages, rain or shine event will feature nine bands. Spectators can bring lawn chairs and blankets; however, no coolers are allowed. Roundtrip bus transportation to and from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is available for purchase.
- Brooks Street will be closed beginning May 7 for approximately four weeks for the re-construction of the intersection with Humphrey Street. During the construction work, Brooks Street will be closed adjacent to Humphrey Street. Access to the parking lots will not be impacted.
- In celebration of Military Spouse Appreciation, the Airman & Family Readiness Center will have drawings for various prizes including a grand prize of a seven-day, six-night stay at Carolina beach. To register visit the A&FRC in building 3602, at 1200 Wright Brothers Ave., by May 14. Winners must show their military ID card to claim their prize. - The Fitness Center is hosting a Mother's Day run May 11 at 11:30 a.m. at the 2 mile track.
- A couples communication class will be held May 16 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Family Place. For more information and to sign up, call 919-722-1123 or 919-722-1878.
- Run to Rescue it hosting spaghetti dinner May 18 at 6 p.m. and 5K trail run/walk May 19 at 8 a.m. Both events take place at Perry Farms in Kinston. The event will benefit She Is She, an organization that rescues and restores women and girls from abuse and slavery. - The Seymour Johnson School Age Program Summer Camp registration is open until May 31. The camp, open to children ages 5-12, takes place at the youth center from June 11 through Aug. 24. Parents and guardians may sign their children up for the weeks of their choice. The camp includes field trips, weekly swimming, bi-weekly bowling and library trips, special interest clubs and open choice activities. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be served daily. Camp hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The camp will not take place on federal holidays. Fees are based on total family income. Camp registration ends May 31. - The city of Goldsboro is looking for participation in order to better the town and some of the surrounding areas. In 2012, the city initiated a planning effort to provide a creative and dynamic plan to guide the future long-term growth and development of areas such as; all of Goldsboro and Saulston townships as well as portions of Buck Swamp, Fork, Brogden and New Hope.
