Volunteers from the 4th Fighter Wing are participating in the first-ever World Book Night by giving out 120 donated books to young Airmen, April 23.

"We chose military-based books to give out to young Airmen so they could relate," said Kim Webb, base library director. "It's nice to give books away."

World Book Night is a campaign that originated in Europe to give away specially printed books donated by authors and publishers. Volunteer book lovers will help spread the joy of reading by handing out books in their communities. Local volunteers will disperse books in Veteran Affairs hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, ball parks and diners.

"I think it is a very clever and innovative way to get books into different hands," Webb said.

Airmen entering the base dining facility will be greeted by volunteers passing out donated books. The goal is to encourage reading and library visits among Airmen.

The books that are being giving out here are "The Kite Runner," "Enders Game" and "The Things They Carried."

"I think this is a great idea to reach out and spread our love for reading to the Airmen," said Mari Hawley, education center employee.

Team Seymour volunteers, along with 20,000 others nationwide, plan to hand out a half a million books in one day.
