Airmen of the 4th Fighter Wing participated in a combat arms training and maintenance course at Howell Woods Firing Range in Smithfield, N.C., April 10, 2012.

Team Seymour was granted permission by Johnston Community College to utilize their range until the base's firing range is operational.

The 12-hour course spans over two days beginning with an eight hour classroom portion. Airmen learn M4 carbine weapon nomenclature, types of ammunition, shooting fundamentals, and weapon assembly and disassembly. During the second day of instruction, students fire and qualify with their primary weapon. Each Airman fires a total of 196 rounds from four different positions: prone unsupported, prone supported, kneeling supported, and over-barricade. To pass the course, Airmen must effectively impact their targets with at least 25 out of 50 rounds.

Additionally, students are required to fire while wearing a gas mask and demonstrate the ability to perform immediate action to correct a weapon malfunction.
