Shortly after constructing the base's first solar panel array powering the marquee at the Oak Forest gate, additional renewable energy signs have been installed on the base.

The pedestrian crossing signs in front of the Seymour Johnson Support Center on Wright Brothers Ave. are using solar-powered light-emitting diode caution lights to improve crosswalk safety.

However, along with the new signs, it's important pedestrians and motorists understand the rules of the road. According to Seymour Johnson Instruction 31-218, Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision and Traffic Code, "Pedestrians must cross streets at designated crosswalks. If a vehicle is approaching the crosswalk, the pedestrian must wait for the vehicle to pass or wait until the vehicle comes to a complete stop before entering the crosswalk. Vehicles must yield the right-of-way to the pedestrians that have entered a crosswalk."

Adhering to this common sense guidance and making the most of new technology ensures safer conditions for all base personnel. These steps toward increased renewable energy usage may seem small but they are essential in laying the groundwork for other renewable energy improvements. Leadership at Seymour Johnson is committed to increasing renewable energy sources in compliance with Executive Order 13423, Energy and Water Reduction Requirements.
