Airmen across the 4th Fighter Wing volunteered their time to help rescued dogs to find a forever home and raise funds for Diamonds in the Ruff, Feb. 11.

Diamonds in the Ruff is a non-profit group, which rescues dogs from shelters and provides them fosters home until they are adopted.

A foster parent is responsible for the dog's well-being such as exercise, grooming and training until it is adopted. The program provides the foster parents with everything from food to funds for veterinary care.

"Being a foster parent is bitter sweet," said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Alecia Desjardins, 916th Medical Group health service technician. "It's sad to see them leave but glad to see that they have a place to call home."

Those who wish to adopt a dog from Diamonds in the Ruff need to fill out an application, will receive a home inspection to ensure the dog is going to a good home and will have their current pet's medical records reviewed.

"I think the program is great," said Chastity Johnson, Diamond in the Ruff volunteer and foster parent. "I like the different events that are held to help find the dogs a home. I will do anything to help these dogs because I love them."

During the adoption event at Cuts-4-Muttz dogs received baths at a discount rate. Donations were accepted and snacks and souvenirs were sold to raise awareness and money for the program. Proceeds are used to provide care for dogs in foster homes.

The next Diamonds in the Ruff adoption event is Feb. 18, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Pet Supplies Plus in Goldsboro. For more information about the program or adoptions, call 919-222-0500 or visit http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/nc-caninerescue.html.
