The 911th Air Refueling Squadron avionics flight keeps the KC-135R Stratotanker flying.

The 911th ARS is a detachment from MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., and works alongside the 916th Air Refueling Wing as an active duty component.

Avionics aviation electronics were pioneered in the 1970s, driven by the military's need to make large amounts of electronic equipment work together. These aircraft electrical systems ensure a safe and reliable flight.

The avionics flight is responsible for the maintenance on those systems. Avionics Airmen conduct inspections on systems ensuring they are functioning properly, and their ability to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair system discrepancies are crucial to job completion. Avionics Airmen will standby before aircraft take-off to make sure all systems are functioning properly.

"We provide quality maintenance to maintain safe, reliable aircraft for global reach initiatives," said Master Sgt. Matt Arsaga, 911th ARS production superintendent.

The flight works on guidance control, airspeed, altitude, and autopilot systems, which guide the aircraft while in flight and inform aircrew on every action the aircraft makes.

Staff Sgt. Dwyane Elders, 911th ARS integrated avionics systems lead technician, shows pride in his job.

"Knowing that our aircraft refuel fighters that support the troops on the ground is very gratifying," Elders said.
