4th MDG takes intramural softball championship Published Aug. 10, 2011 By Staff Sgt. Heather Stanton 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Intramural softball season ended in a battle of the bats between the 4th Medical Group and 4th Logistics Readiness Squadron Aug. 1, with the 4th MDG pulling ahead 18-14. The game was the culminating event in a weeklong double-elimination tournament. "It feels great to win," said Matthew Campbell, 4th MDG shortstop and coach. "The 4th LRS always had a good team and is tough to beat. It felt good to finally get one against them, and even better that it was the championship game." The 4th MDG softball team played well throughout the season after a rough start, according to Matthew McVeigh, 4th MDG right center-fielder. "This whole season was a highlight," he said. "Our team went on a 16-game winning streak going into the championship game after a 0-3 start. It was remarkable how our team came together when we could have easily given up." Though this is the first season this group has played together, one member has been a part of the team for nearly two decades. Jimi Wunder, the 4th MDG pitcher, has played for the team for 17 seasons and winning the championship in his last season is one of his proudest moments. "This team never quit," he said. "It was fun to watch and be a part of. As much fun as I have had these last 17 years, I think next year I will just play Tiddlywinks." Campbell is proud of his team and the effort put forth throughout the season. "I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys and girls," he said. "Everyone supported each other, picked each other up and never complained about playing time or where they were playing. Also, the support we had throughout the playoffs and championship from everyone did not go unnoticed. It was unbelievable."
