Did you know the second leading cause of fires on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is improperly disposed smoking materials? While some of these fires are reported, there are quite a few fires that are not. It's sad but true.

In order to limit these types of fires, here are a few simple rules to follow:
· Only smoke in approved areas.
· Put it out, all the way every time. Cigarettes really must be completely stubbed out in an ashtray, never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash.
· Dispose of cigarette butts in an approved receptacle.
· Supervisors must inspect smoking areas and empty receptacles weekly or as needed.
· If there is a fire dial 911.
