Get those butts outta here Published July 29, 2010 By Eric Harper 4th Civil Engineer Squadron SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Did you know the second leading cause of fires on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is improperly disposed smoking materials? While some of these fires are reported, there are quite a few fires that are not. It's sad but true. In order to limit these types of fires, here are a few simple rules to follow: · Only smoke in approved areas. · Put it out, all the way every time. Cigarettes really must be completely stubbed out in an ashtray, never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash. · Dispose of cigarette butts in an approved receptacle. · Supervisors must inspect smoking areas and empty receptacles weekly or as needed. · If there is a fire dial 911.
