Members of the Wayne County for Children Council and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Child Development Center gathered in downtown Goldsboro to attend the Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation ceremony April 6.

Goldsboro Mayor Alphonzo King opened the ceremony and authorized the Child Abuse Prevention Month flag to be flown over City Hall for 30 days.

Each year approximately five million children are reported as abused or neglected in the U.S. Last year in North Carolina there were 122,672 children effected by abuse or neglect. In 2008, 33 children died as a result of child abuse homicide in North Carolina.

To help end this problem, Mayor King called on everyone in the Goldsboro community to increase their vigilance and report any suspected cases of abuse or neglect.
