SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Parents and children from Team Seymour kicked off the "Month of Military Child" with a parade here, April 1. Former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger established the event to recognize military children in their community in 1986.

In America, more than 1.7 million children have at least one parent serving in the armed forces. The Department of Defense, military services and communities around the world recognize the importance of military children during the month-long celebration. During this month, leaders and parents show their support to military children with celebrations, speeches, arts and crafts shows, picnics, carnivals, fairs, parades, block parties, posters, media interviews and personal contact. The festivities let children know they are appreciated and supported.
