Client support administrators with the 4th Communications Squadron Client Support Center are seeking out computers not yet migrated to Windows Vista to align with the Air Force mandated migration to the operating system by April 30.

"The completion of this migration will help maintain the security of the Air Force enterprise network," said 2nd Lt. Robert Bireley, 4th CS operations flight deputy.

The transition to Vista on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base began in May 2009.

"As users received new computers, they typical migrated to Windows Vista at the same time," Bireley said. "Many users also have had a technician come to their work center to upgrade their computer in place."

As technicians reach out to base personnel operating under Windows XP, there are a few steps users can take to streamline the migration process.

"As with any significant change to a computer, it's very important users back up their personal documents and e-mail files," Bireley said. "Users should also take note that work-related documents should preferably be stored on their organization's file share where they will be backed-up automatically."

Not all computers on base will be compatible with Windows Vista.

"My staff has worked extremely hard with points of contact around the base to identify functional systems that cannot operate properly with Vista and placed those systems in a protected place so your operations can keep running," said Maj. Paul Whitfield, 4th CS commander.

The 4th CS CSC staff will push the migration to 50 computers daily as coordinated with functional system administrators during normal duty hours.

"The goal is to reduce the amount of pain you, our customers, will feel," Whitfield said. "We know there will be issues and will work these individually as they arise. Be patient when calling our CSC, we will assist every user and get them back up and running."
