Shutdown by ice, snow

A winter storm left Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and much of North Carolina with hazardous road conditions and ice Jan. 30. The storm that came through North Carolina also produced massive amounts of snow in northern Arizona, Texas and Oklahoma while dousing Louisiana, Alabama and Florida with rain. Base operations were shutdown for all except security forces and heavy-equipment drivers.

While the roads around base were cleared for Monday morning traffic, the flightline and ramps were left to melt on their own. Base leadership canceled flying operations Feb. 1 and the heavy equipment Airmen from the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron and Airfield Management were on stand-by, waiting to see whether or not they will need to plow the flightline and ramps for the F-15E Strike Eagles and KC-135 Stratotankers or if Mother Nature will melt the snow and ice on her own.
