4FW Airman killed in vehicle accident

Senior Airman Matthew Schultz, a 4th Component Maintenance Squadron aircrew egress journeyman assigned to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., was killed in a vehicle accident Sept. 5 while on leave.

A memorial will be held Sept. 10 at the base chapel, the service starts at 2:00 p.m.

The 4th Fighter Wing sends heartfelt condolences to Airman Schultz's family, as well as all members of the 4th CMS.

"SrA Matthew Schultz was one of our finest airmen. He was a dedicated airman with a love for his Air Force and his job. His uplifting and can-do attitude will be greatly missed by everyone that he has touched on and off duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family." said Maj. Barton Kenerson, 4th CMS commander.

Airman Schultz was born in Syracuse, New York June 3, 1988. He graduated from Alexandria Central High School in June 2006, two months later he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

After completing Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, Airman Schultz attended Aircrew Egress Systems Technical Training School at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. After training, he was assigned to the 35th Maintenance Squadron at Misawa Air Base, Japan, where he performed ejection seat maintenance on 45 F-16CJ aircraft. During this time Airman Schultz deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Airman Schultz was later reassigned to the 4th FW here at Seymour Johnson where he performed vital ejection seat maintenance and inspections on 96 F-15E aircraft.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
