Servicemembers entering the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base main gate early in the morning Aug. 29 found themselves subject to random drug testing as part of Operation Nighthawk.

U.S. Air Force Instruction 44-120 outlines the U.S. Air Force Drug Abuse Testing Program which states that all U.S. Air Force active duty; Reserve and Air National Guard members are subject to drug testing. The goal of the program is to maintain the health and wellness of a fit-to-fight force and a drug-free Air Force community.

Operation Nighthawk is a drug demand reduction initiative to keep drugs off the installation and out of the Air Force. During the operation, all military members entering the installation during a specific time were directed through a letter signed by Col. Mark Kelly, 4th Fighter Wing commander, to provide a urine sample for drug testing.

Military members who fail to comply with the order are subject to punitive action under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The U.S. Air Force drug abuse testing program tests for all illegal drugs.
