The children's library at the Watkins-Das Learning Center re-opened its doors June 9, 2009.

The library was closed May 4 to begin the new renovation project that added kid-friendly shelves, more books and larger tables to increase family participation in library functions, said Kimberly Huskins-Webb, library director.

"Our main objective was to make the place more functional and inviting," she said. "We were glad to get bigger tables, so maybe now children and their parents can come in and do homework as opposed to them just grabbing a book and leaving."

The staff was able to renovate the library after receiving a grant from Air Combat Command. They decided what areas in the library needed to be "spruced up," Mrs. Webb said. They purchased posters, rugs, tables and books to add to the make-over.

Many of the new books purchased have an emphasis on creativity, the theme of this year's summer reading program which begins June 23. The staff also purchased non-fiction books to help older children with school projects or research, she said.

The library staff would like to thank the Airman Leadership School and volunteers from the Southern Eagle Dining facility for all of their assistance in the remodeling, Mrs. Huskins-Webb said. Everyone is encouraged to join the summer reading program beginning June 23.
