The Air Force Assistance Fund campaign begins March 16 in an effort to raise money to help Airmen and their families.

Officials hope to exceed the $8 million donated in 2008.

"The goal of the Air Force Assistance Fund is to support members of our Air Force family in need," said Capt. Randon Storms, 4th Fighter Wing's AFAF project officer.

The fund allows Airmen to assist victims of natural disaster or experience a family crisis, Captain Storms said.

The contributions benefit Airmen and their families. Airmen can donate to the Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Enlisted Village, Air Force Village Foundation and the General and Mrs. Curtis E. Lemay Foundation. Airmen may contribute through cash, check, money order or payroll deduction.

Nearly 800 Airmen here received a combined $425,000 in assistance from the fund in 2008, said Jay Jenkins, Airmen and Family Readiness Center.

Assistance funds can be used toward car payments or repairs, utilities or groceries, and no-interest loans are available for emergencies. The fund can also be used to help families with higher-education expenses.

"Because of the economic downturn, civilian charities are receiving less support from the private sector, leaving Airmen in need with fewer options in the face of a crisis," Captain Storms said. "Support through the Air Force Assistance Fund may be the only place they have to go for relief."

Donating is more important than ever this year, Captain Storms said.

All contributions are tax deductible.
