In celebration of Independence Day and the safe return of hundreds of Airmen here,
the base hosted its annual Military Appreciation Day July 3 at the field across from the BellaMorphosis women health club.

Activities included live band performances from The Wrights, Elizabeth Cook, and Matthew Perryman Jones, and a firework's showcase that ended the event.

The event was held from 5 to 8 p.m. with the fireworks rounding out the festivities Booths from base booster clubs and private organizations sold summer favorites like freeze pops, popcorn, hot dogs nachos, and hamburgers.

Various games were set up by the booster clubs for children, but adults were not left out. Cakes donated by club members were auctioned off to the highest bidder. The Cub Scouts held a raffle for a racquetball set and Group 56, raffled off two "baskets for two," which included a gift card to a restaurant, a bottle of apple cider, two champagne glasses, and a bag of chocolate.

This was the first time in a while the event was held July 3, instead of Independence Day, said Mary Rawles, event coordinator.

"It's been a really good turnout," said Mrs. Rawles. "The booster clubs played a huge
part in making this happen."

The clubs got together and discussed what foods they would sell and what activities would be held.

"They use this as a fundraiser for their sections," she said.

The musical guest pumped up the crowd with country tunes and patriotic songs throughout the evening.

"They were so devoted to coming and playing for the troops that they volunteered to
come and paid for their own lodging. They're really excited to be here."

Excitement spilled over to the children who enjoyed Kiddy Land, inflatable slides and playhouses, which were in a safe, gated area, said Jordania Leary, the family childcare coordinator.

Kiddy Land was sponsored by the parent advisory board, and the money charged for admission will be used to fund programs for the Childcare Center, the Youth Care Center and the Family Childcare Program, said Mrs. Leary.

Captain Ed Colfer, F-15 E Strike Eagle demo team commander attended the event with his family for the first time and appreciated the care provided.

"We didn't expect so much," Capt. Colfer said. "It's great they gated off the area so you can keep an eye on the kids. We could leave our son over here and not have to worry about him."
