The 4th Mission Support Squadron and 4th Services Squadron combined to form the new 4th Force Support Squadron in an activation ceremony Feb. 4 at the Aircraft Parts Store hangar.

The base is the eighth to consolidate squadrons under this Air Force-wide initiative.

"All bases are projected to be in this structure by 2010," said Maj. Tammy Trychon, who took command of the 4th FSS after serving as the 4th MSS commander.

Though the merger is fairly new, there are some early advantages in making this move.

"We are combining resources - equipment, funding, manpower and most importantly, brainpower," Major Trychon said. "Currently, it will not impact daily operations for the different programs and activities we have. We will look to see if there are ways our programs can synergize, or build energy and momentum by working together more closely."

While junior enlisted Airmen may not see much impact in their day-to-day operations, the NCO, Senior NCO and officer tiers will see expectations rise.

"The higher ranks will feel more of the effect because the management processes will have to adapt to a larger squadron," Major Trychon said.

In fact, the squadron is slated to increase sevenfold in size if viewed from an MSS perspective.

"According to our Manpower Programming and Execution System database, before the transformation, the 4th MSS consisted of 56 personnel while the 4th SVS had 349 personnel," said Tech. Sgt. Tynisha Hill, 4th FSS manpower management analyst. "With the merger, the new 4th FSS has a total of 405 personnel. This places the 4th FSS as the third largest squadron on base behind 4th AMXS and 4th EMS respectively."

While integrating two squadrons into one may seem like a daunting task, the 4th FSS is primed and ready to handle any bumps in the road.

There will be some growing pains in the beginning as we shuffle around and get the new team settled, but in a month or two, I believe we'll be a really outstanding team, Major Trychon said.

The 4th FSS office is located on the second floor of building 3601.
