The base tax center opens Feb. 4 through April 16 for all Airmen, dependents and retirees seeking a free alternative for assistance with 2007 tax returns.

In 2007, the center assisted more than 1,500 Airmen, dependents and retirees with their 2006 returns, according to Staff Sgt. Natasha Crumpton, site coordinator for the center.

The center is located on Wright Brothers Avenue in building 3636 and is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Filing taxes at the center takes between 30 minutes to an hour to complete, according to Sergeant Crumpton.

Those wishing to file taxes must bring social security cards, W-2 and 1099 forms, military identification card, the previous year's return, childcare expenses with the provider's contact information and social security number, and any additional earned income received, Sergeant Crumpton said. These required items help ensure the accuracy of the return which cuts down on amended returns and the processing time.

The center is open for walk-ins for those with W-2s only Wednesdays from noon to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Individuals who qualify for education credit, residential energy credit, child and dependent care credit, mortgage interest credit and first-time homebuyer credit will not be able to file returns until after Feb. 11 due to tax service software updates, said Airman Shaun Markel, site coordinator.
