The 4th Fighter Wing, in conjunction with 14th Air Support Operations Squadron, began conducting Operation Snow Bird December 10 over the cities and mountains along the Tennessee/N.C. border.

"Operation Snow Bird is a weeklong close air support exercise where the 335th Fighter Squadron will be working with joint tactical air controllers from the 14th ASOS in a military operations area located 70 miles to the east of Knoxville, Tenn.," said 1st Lt. Gregory Hunger, 335th Fighter Squadron. "The major goal of this exercise is to expose both the 335th Fighter Squadron and the 14th ASOS to operating in mountainous terrain and experience scenarios similar to those in Operation Enduring Freedom."

The aircraft will perform aerial maneuvers twice daily from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"This exercise will be conducted with only military units," Lt. Hunger said. "However, it was made possible with the help of the Federal Aviation Administration and the military operation specialist within Atlanta Center, Robbie McGrath."

Operation Snow Bird is scheduled to end December 14.
