Eating healthy. These are all activities in which youth can participate, but they are also activities youth can earn points towards prizes by enrolling in the Fit Factor program offered at the base youth center. Fit Factor, an Air Force-wide program implemented here October 2005, focuses on youth fitness. Youth who participate receive points which earn them prizes once they reach certain incentive levels. For example, walking the dog earns a participant 25 points, while participating in team sporting events such as flag football or wrestling nets a participant 50 points. A full list of activities and point values are available at http://www.afgetfit.com/activities.aspx. There are more than 250 activities for which youth can earn points for prizes. Prizes offered include hats, T-shirts, level wristbands, notebooks and other items. Youth can sign up at their local youth center and receive a username and password. The username allows youth to log into their account from any computer with internet access and provides them a means to record their points for a specific activity. Youth can earn up to 100 points per day and once they eclipse an incentive level, they receive e-mail notification to pick up their prize from the youth center. Between 5-25 percent of children in the U.S. are obese, according to www.kidsource.com. With the implementation of Fit Factor, AF leaders are ensuring youth are provided an opportunity to beat the statistic instead of being the statistic. "My staff and I are proud to be pioneers for the AF in facilitating this awesome program for our AF youth," said Thomas McQuaig, director of youth programs.
