Retirees help save nearly 300K through volunteerism Published July 5, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Shane Dunaway 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- Local retirees on and around base have kicked it into volunteer overdrive, saving roughly $300,000 in the process. There are approximately 300 retirees and their spouses who are active volunteers in the local community as well as on base, including more than 80 who volunteer through the wing's retiree activities office, said Elmer Bryans, a retired senior master sergeant who volunteers at the office. The money saved is based off what it would cost to hire someone to do the work the retirees do on a voluntary basis. The volunteers provide a wide variety of services, from assisting at Wayne Memorial Hospital to producing newsletters pertaining to retiree concerns. The RAO is always looking for more people willing to help, Mr. Bryans said. "We're working to expand our volunteer group and let other organizations utilize their skills," Mr. Bryans said. The RAO here was founded by Col. Roy Vick in 1973. Since then, many others have volunteered their time and skills to help others after they retired from the military, Mr. Bryans said. "I cannot say enough about those who volunteer with such dedication and desire to help others," Mr. Bryans said. "When you see a volunteer, give them a nod and say 'Thank you,' because they are truly dedicated individuals." To volunteer, call the RAO at 722-1119.
