Fitness center hosts 24-hour relay-a-thon Published May 2, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Shane Dunaway 4th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- The 4th Services Squadron hosted its first-ever 24-hour relay-a-thon April 28 to 29 at the fitness center's quarter-mile track. According to Senior Airman Stephen Amlie, 4th SVS fitness and sports specialist, the event was intended as a pre-deployment and family event, but it also served a dual-role in the Air Force's mission of being fit to fight. "We rarely have big marathons on base," Airman Amlie said. "We wanted to do something a little different for runners who like running for distance." Teams from the 4th Logistic Readiness Squadron, 4th Comptroller Squadron, 4th Component Maintenance Squadron, 4th Maintenance Group, legal office and 4th SVS participated in the event. The six teams combined to total more than 750 miles during the event. The 4th LRS team took home a trophy and medals for placing first following their 156-mile effort. Only one runner from each team was allowed to run at a time. For those who were not running, refreshments were available to them, including fresh fruit and drinks, which were donated by the commissary. The fitness center also provided cots in the gym so tired or winded Airmen could regroup and rejuvenate. The event was well-received by participants. "I think this was a great idea," said 1st Lt. Damien Miller, travel management office flight commander and member of the 4th LRS team. "It was a great event in terms of team building and promoting physical fitness."
