The year 2007 is the 50th anniversary of the 4th Fighter Wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

There will be a series of events to celebrate this occasion. Starting in January, the wing history office will do a series of ten articles in the Wright Times.

The subject of these articles will be "The Greatest Heroes of the 4th Fighter Wing."

The 4th FW has had so many heroes and heroines that choosing only ten is no easy task.

That is where you come in.

Send your choices for our greatest heroes or a single hero to roy.heidicker@seymourjohnson.af.mil.

If your recommendation is powerful enough, it may be the basis for one of the articles.

The hero you recommend can be active duty or civilian. The time frame is from the eagle squadrons through today.

Even a person who never actually served with the Fourth But First, but somehow made a significant contribution can be nominated. This could be someone like Mayor Scott B. Berkeley, or the spouse of someone who served in the wing.

A grand prize will be awarded to the person who sends in either the best list of heroes, or presents the most thoughtful case for a single hero.

The prize will be a one-eighteenth-scale model of the P-51D Mustang, the Ridge Runner, flown by Major Pierce W. McKennon, a World War II ace from the 335th Fighter Squadron. The aircraft can be used as a display for home or office.

The winner will be selected by the wing historian. Entries must be submitted before Jan 2. The winner will be announced after the last of the ten articles is published.
