SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. -- EDITORIAL
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base has once again put Goldsboro on the map, earning the prestigious Dick Schram Community Relations Award from the International Council of Air Shows. This award recognizes the exceptional community partnership and public engagement showcased during the 2025 Wings Over Wayne open house, an event that drew over 130,000 people to our community.
The success of Wings Over Wayne was a true testament to the power of collaboration between the SJAFB and our local community. The event, headlined by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, was made possible through the tireless efforts of countless local partners.
Debuting this year, Jams over Wayne transformed the traditional invite-only Thunderbird meet-and-greet into a public celebration. Developed with the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Goldsboro, the event provided a relaxed setting for the community to engage with the Thunderbird and enjoy food and live music, returning their unwavering support.
From our emergency responders and law enforcement agencies to STEM organizations, Wayne County officials, local hotels, transportation providers, and dedicated volunteers; the entire community came together to ensure a safe and memorable experience for everyone.
WoW 2025 was a true team effort that reflected the strength of our community and our mission. The support we received from Goldsboro and Wayne County made this achievement possible, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2027 for an even better experience.
Adding to the accolades, the Thunderbirds named SJAFB the No.1 Military Site of the Year, citing the incredible organization, logistics, and outstanding community support. This honor comes with the exciting news that the Thunderbirds will be returning to our skies in May 2027 for the next airshow.
Beyond the breathtaking aerial displays, WoW 2025 served as a vital platform to highlight military careers, promote science and technology education, and deepen the public's understanding of the 4th Fighter Wing's crucial role in our nation's defense. The event provided a unique opportunity for local families to connect with the Airmen who live and serve in our community, strengthening the bonds between our military and civilian neighbors.
As we celebrate this well-deserved recognition, we look forward to continuing this tradition of partnership and community spirit for years to come. Mark your calendars for Wings Over Wayne 2027, it’s sure to be an event that makes our hometown proud once again.
