As we approach the New Year, for many service members at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, finding a safe and affordable place to call home is a top priority. Your Military Housing Office (MHO) is your dedicated partner in this process, committed to ensuring every Airman and their family have the support they need. In light of the challenges faced by our community, including housing scams last summer, we are highlighting the many ways the MHO is working to protect you and your family, whether you live on or off base.

Protect Yourself and Your Finances:

The Smartest Move You Can Make is Renter's Insurance

Whether you are renting a home downtown or living in base housing, one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself is to secure renter's insurance. For a small monthly fee, renter's insurance protects you from financial loss in case of theft, fire, or other unforeseen damage to your personal property. It is an affordable safety net that provides invaluable peace of mind. The MHO can provide information and resources to help you find the right policy for your needs. While the MHO does not endorse any one provider, there are resources available to aid you in your search. Keep in mind that insurance amounts and coverage may vary depending on location. Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, new tenants of on-base housing will be required to have an insurance policy. If interested in on-base housing, talk to your sponsor and MHO for on-base housing renter’s insurance details.

On-Base and Off-Base:

We Have You Covered

The MHO mission is simple: to help service members find suitable, affordable, and safe housing. This mission extends to every member of Team Seymour, regardless of where they choose to live.

  • For On-Base Residents: The MHO is your advocate, working closely with on-base housing partners to ensure quality living conditions and prompt resolution of any issues. We are here to ensure your on-base experience is a positive one.
  • For Off-Base Residents: Choosing to live in the local community comes with its own set of opportunities and challenges. The MHO provides crucial support to help you navigate the off-base market, including lease reviews, maintaining a list of approved properties, and assistance with landlord/tenant disputes. Our goal is to empower you to make informed decisions.

Beware of Scams

Know Where to Look and Who You are Paying
With so many options available it can be difficult to tell if you are making a correct or responsible decision. We recommend that you:

  • Scrutinize all listings: There a multitude of platforms that aid in searching for homes, a safe place to start your search with verified listings is https://www.homes.mil.
  • Question any upfront deposits via money apps: Members should exercise extreme caution when transferring funds via money apps. Listing could not be accurate, or the money could be transferred to the incorrect person.
  • See the property before committing funds: pictures can be outdated and may not represent what the property currently looks like. Personally visit the location and /or send someone locally that you trust to verify the property lives up to your standards.
