Social media outlets have become a popular way for people around the world to connect with each other, making every Airman a communicator.

Social media combines social interaction and technology allowing us to share words, pictures, videos and sounds with family, friends and even total strangers thanks to Web sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Being the cutting-edge Airmen we are, it is imperative we stay on the forefront of these technological advances. This is not the first transition to more interactive communication methods. It happened before when the Air Force went to Web-based news publications and is happening again with the ability to access social networking sites in the work place. Sites such as Facebook and Twitter provide instantaneous communication with vast audiences. Utilizing these products allows Seymour Johnson Air Force Base to tell its story to the masses in a timely manner.

Our base is utilizing Facebook to share stories, videos, and other news and information to let not only Airmen, but local civilians, know what is going on behind the base's gates. Many civilians hear about what is happening in deployed locations, but are not as informed about what servicemembers do on the homefront and Facebook makes it easier to get out that information.

The 4th Fighter Wing Facebook page is also a forum for users to leave feedback on what they want to see or do by using the available discussion boards. The page is also an avenue where questions can be asked and answered for the benefit of all site fans. What the Public Affairs office would like to see is Airmen interaction on the site such as constructive questions or an avenue for the Seymour Johnson community to show pride in what they do.

While communicating online, always be aware of what is being posted. Never post classified or sensitive information such as troop movements, force size or weapons details. Also be careful of the details, texts, photos and videos posted to social networking profiles. It is recommended for all users to set their profiles to "private" so only "friends" can see specifics.

If you have any questions on whether to post something or not, contact your security manager or the PA office at 722-0027. Be sure to become a fan of the 4th Fighter Wing on Facebook at www.facebook.com/4thfighterwing.
