4th FW commemorates Battle of Britain with RAF piano burning tradition
A piano burns brightly, illuminating Airmen gathered to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the Battle of Britain at the Spitfire Pub on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Sept. 1. The annual event typically has decorated pianos judged; first place is supposed to be spared fiery destruction, with the runners-up usually smashed into kindling or burned in one piece. The gathering brought together officers and aircrew from the 4th Fighter Wing and Royal Air Force exchange officers to celebrate the event. (U.S. Air Force photo by 1st Lt. Matt Schroff/Released)
