4th FW commemorates Battle of Britain with RAF piano burning tradition
Flames rise into the night as the first of several pianos are burned to commemorate the Battle of Britain at the Spitfire Pub on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Sept. 1. The Battle of Britain is widely considered the first major victory of Allied forces during World War II. By the end of the battle, Allied forces had destroyed more than 1,800 aircraft of the German Luftwaffe. (U.S. Air Force photo by 2nd Lt. Keavy Rake/Released)
