4th FW commemorates Battle of Britain with RAF piano burning tradition

Captain Josh Aldus plays one last song as the first of many pianos are set on fire during the Battle of Britain commemoration party at the Spitfire Pub on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Sept. 1. The origins of the tradition of burning a piano are disputed, but one commonly held belief is the piano is burned in memory of a downed Royal Air Force aviator. The fallen pilot’s comrades burned the piano, deeming that no other could ever play as well as him. Aldus is a weapons system operator from the 336th Fighter Squadron.
