Heart of purple

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Justin Beasley, 4th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal technician, received the Purple Heart medal during a ceremony at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C., Nov. 8, 2013. During a recent deployment to Afghanistan, Beasley’s convoy ran over an improvised explosive device. After escaping the ensuing firefight, he was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and still suffers from hearing loss. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Brittain Crolley)
