U.S. Air Force Maj. Amber Millerchip, 4th Fighter Wing public affairs chief, comes from a long line of military Service members. On Veteran’s Day she reflects on her grandfather, Ret. Lt. Col. George O'Neal, a flying sergeant, who was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic actions during World War II. He was strafing enemy Japanese boats off the coast of New Guinea in an A-20 Havoc aircraft. After his right engine was hit, he made a controlled crash in the water. Afterward, he and his crew swam to shore, then escaped and evaded enemy forces to make it to friendly territory.
